Assessment nutrition using prealbumin as marker in critically ill patients

ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the use of prealbumin in the assessment of nutrition in critically ill patients.
Setting: A teaching hospital, Monterrey, Mexico.
Design: Case series report.
Patients: Sixty five (33 men, 32 women, mean age 43 ± 18 years) ICU patients with nutrition support.
Interventions: Use of enteral and parenteral nutrition.
Results: Hospital stay was 28 ± 7 days. General surgery (33.8), sepsis (15.38%), respiratory failure (15.38%) were the most important problems. Enteral nutrition was used in 38.4% and parenteral nutrition in 61.5%. Basal level of prealbumin was 11.17 mg/L, 15.6 mg/L at the second week and 25.6 mg at fourth week. Negative nitrogen balance was 10 ± 8 g/d at the beginning, and positive at the second and fourth week (3 ± 2 (7 ± 4) mg/dL respectively.
Conclusion: The determination of prealbumin is a useful marker in the assessment of nutrition in critically ill patients.
