ABSTRACT
The loss of the cutaneous covering of the hand is a challenge for the plastic surgeon and often requires skin grafts and/or a skin flap. We present 10 patients operated on for loss of skin cover due to traumatic injuries, using a posterior interosseous flap. These patients were scheduled for skin coverage from March 2010 to March 2016 and we reviewed them retrospectively in terms of demographic factors, etiology, and location of the wound, flap dimension, results and complications. Of the 10 patients, flap survival was total in eight patients and partial in two. In five patients there was mild to moderate venous congestion without compromising the final result of the flap. The preference in the use of the posterior interosseous vessels posterior flaps, generally provide an adequate blood supply in order to cover most defects of the distal forearm, back of the hand and anterior and dorsal surface of the wrist. We conclude that the posterior interosseous flap is a reliable and effective alternative for covering wounds where the range of the pedicle allows it.
