ABSTRACT
Introduction. Cognitive alterations and vascular dementia increase with age and even more so in patients with vascular risk factors. It is considere done of the most frequent forms of dementia and its importance has recently increased when it is demonstrated that cerebral vascular lesions are a common component of many neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. In recent years a large number of investigations have been directed to detect and evaluate at a nearly stage those patients with an elevated vascular risk and the possibility of developing a dementia in the coming years. They tries to know if there are alterations of cerebral cortical neurodynamics in patients with cognitive impairment of vascular origin.
Methods. An evaluation of cerebral cortical neurodynamics was performed by using the Neurodynamic Stetiometric Method in a sample of 45 patients with cognitive disorders (minor cognitive alterations) and cerebral vascular lesions documented by nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.
Results: An abnormality of the cerebral cortical neurodynamic state that encompassed most of the sample was found. Subcortical white matter lesions due to small vessel vascular disease were predominant in skull Nuclear Magnetic Resonance images. Neurodynamic abnormalities in the sample of patients were clearly related to the time of evolution of the cognitive disorder.
Conclusions. The vascular cognitive disorder was accompanied by extensive abnormality of the cerebral cortical neurodynamic state.
