ABSTRACT
Background. The exposition of ethnic groups to an urban environment has impacted the rates of obesity and diabetes.
Objective. Assess the prevalence of abnormal glucose metabolism (AGM) and its relationship with risk factors for diabetes (RFD) in Huichol people with styles of rural and urban life.
Methods. A transversal study was performed convenience type two Huichol indigenous groups were formed; Group 1, 100 participants of communities from Nayar and La Yesca, state of nayarit, Group 2, 100 participants from city of Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico, with one year or more of residence. The participants determined; fasting glucose and 2-hour post-load, anthropometric measurements, levels of caloric intake and physical activity. The variables using logistic regression test were analyzed, to determine the relationship with RFD.
Results. AGM prevalence was higher in Group 2 vs Group 1, although no significant difference was found, except in impaired fasting glucose (IFG) (p‹ 0.05). Elevated body mass index (BMI) was the most RFD related to AGM (p ‹ 0.0001).
Conclusions. The prevalence of the AGM in Group 2 showed a non-significant increase vs Group 1, except for the IFG which was a significant increase in the exposed group, also showed elevated BMI as the most correlated RFD with the AGM, which may represent a risk for this ethnic group of developing T2DM in the coming years.
