ABSTRACT
Introduction: The objective of this study was to compare the presence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in relatives of those who died due to unexpected vs expected death.
Methods: A cross-sectional study examined 60 relatives of deceased individuals (22 unexpected death and 38 expected death) with the trait-state anxiety inventory (IDARE), the Zung depression scale, and the severity of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder.
Results: There is an association of posttraumatic stress disorder with unexpected death (59.1%) and for expected death (68.3%). We identified some predisposing factors to PTSD: female sex, scholar grade, family nucleus, social relationships, high score in IDARE and Zung scale.
Conclusion: PTSD affects both those who lost a relative due to unexpected and expected death, so that preventive psychological analysis is mandatory.
