ABSTRACT
Introduction: The use of benzodiazepines is frequent in the elderly, although their abusive use can lead to adverse effects that are object of attention. Objective: Characterize the benzodiazepine consumption and, in particular, to identify the sociodemographic characteristics, personal pathological antecedents; describe the type of benzodiazepine, characteristics of consumption dependence; determine the presence of side effects associated with consumption according to the sexes, and identify if the characteristics of consumption are related to dependence.
Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional study in community elders, who consumed benzodiazepines, attended at CITED in 2017, who met the inclusion criteria: 60 years old or more, volunteers. It was taken into consideration: sex, age, education, personal pathological history, types of benzodiazepines, characteristics of consumption, side effects and dependence. A semi-structured interview was applied and clinical histories were reviewed. Descriptive statistics, X2 test and Fisher's statistic were used for p≥0.05. The ethical principles were met.
Results: Predominated: female sex, 70-79 years old, high level of schooling, presence of chronic noncommunicable diseases, long-lived benzodiazepine use, 1 tablet, once a day, for 3 years or more, with and without medical prescription. The loss of balance was the most marked adverse reaction in both sexes. Clinically significant differences were found for sedation with predominance of women, as well as in terms of dependence and time of consumption, in general (the elderly who had 3 years or more of consumption were dependent on the drug).
Conclusions: The benzodiazepine consumption could be characterized. Final recommendations are offered.
