ABSTRACT
Dental maturation assessment is generally accepted as the most reliable method for age estimation in children. Several methods for dental age estimation have been described, being Demirjian´s method (DM) the most widely used. The identification of bodies or living persons is, given its importance in the ethical and legal field (civil or criminal) one of the main challenges for practitioners of forensic medicine. The estimation of age in individuals aged 14 to 25 years old is useful for human identification in the clinical practice and forensic thanatology; it is also an indicator of growth and development. When all the permanent teeth have completed their formation, the third molar root development is the only indicator that can be used to predict the age of individuals up to 25 years. In this review, we analize the current methods used for determining dental and chronological age, including Demirjian´s method.
