ABSTRACT
Demodicosis is an ectoparasitosis caused by mites of the genus
Demodex, species
folliculorum and
brevis. These mites are cosmopolitan
and behave as commensal of the pilosebasea unit, in
which they feed on sebum, cell detritus, plasma and bacteria.
The cutaneous parasitation is characterized for being a
facial dermatosis, mainly on seborrheic areas, with a diverse
clinical presentation: pytiriasis folliculorum, papulo-pustular demodicosis,
and
Demodex blepharitis.
Recently, demodicosis has been recognized as a skin disease,
and also, there has been a couple propositions to classify it, in
order to include all clinical presentations, whether if its isolated
or associated to other dermatoses.
The pathophysiology of this disease has not been completely
understood, it is thought to be due to an infestation of
the pillosebaceus unit through mechanic or chemical factors, or
even, symbiosis with bacteria such as
Bacillus oleronius.
We conducted a review of the diagnostic techniques that
have been used throughout the study of this disease, with a
step-by-step description of each technique, as well as the cutoff
point, sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic methods.
