ABSTRACT
Blood borne virus infection has long been recognized as an
important hazard for patients and healthcare workers (hcw).
The main concern is centered in hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis
C virus (HCV) and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
These viruses can be found in body fluids other than blood, and
constitute a major occupational hazard for healthcare workers
(HCW), especially in highly resource constrained countries.
This paper pretends to offer an overview of the problem
and also a brief summary of the universal prevention measures,
the existing labor laws in Mexico that apply for this situation, as
well as the post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
