ABSTRACT
Introduction: Hypovitaminosis D is a high-prevalent health problem worldwide. Low serum concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D has been associated with cardiovascular diseases and high mortality. Older adults are at greater risk of deficiency. Nonetheless, hypovitaminosis D frequency is unknown in our population, as well as its association with osteopenia and cardiovascular risk.
Objective: Examine the frequency of hypovitaminosis D in asymptomatic older adults, the correlation between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations and densitometry results, and identify the associations between vitamin D concentration, age, and cardiovascular risk.
Material and methods: We evaluated 303 asymptomatic patients older than 55 years recruited from the department of preventive medicine of Centro Médico ABC between 2016 to 2018. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the correlation between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D and cardiovascular risk (ACC/AHA 2013).
Results: Our population had a mean age of 69 ± 8.5 years, 74.5% had hypovitaminosis D in some degree, 35.64% in the range of insufficiency, 38.61% in the deficiency of which, 10.25% had concentrations lower than 10 ng/mL. We observed a positive correlation between T-score and bone mineral density with the logarithmic function of vitamin D3, and a negative correlation between the concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and cardiovascular risk evaluated by ACC/AHA 2013.
Conclusion: Hypovitaminosis D (‹ 30 ng/mL) is common among older adults and, in the presence of osteopenia, it is associated with higher cardiovascular risk.
