ABSTRACT
Chickenpox is an exanthematous infection of the skin caused by the varicella zoster virus. The epidemiological peak is located in childhood, when 90 % of cases comes out, generally benign and self-limited course. The disease is acquired by inhaling particles that contain nasopharynx viruses from infected individuals. The initial infection of the respiratory epithelium extends to cells of the reticuloendothelial system and finally a state of viremia occurs with manifestations in the skin and eventually in the viscera. One of the most fearsome complications is chickenpox pneumonia, due to the high mortality that affects 10 % - 30 % of cases, usually in adults. We describe a case of an apparently healthy adult that begins with typical manifestations of varicella and rapidly evolves to respiratory complication. This patient was treated with acyclovir, steroids, non-invasive ventilation and satisfactorily discharged.REFERENCES
