ABSTRACT
Introduction: Breast cancer still is a public health problem worldwide. It is estimated that 2.1 million women are diagnosed each year, of which 626,680 die with a five-year survival rate of 30-50% in developed countries.
Objective: Present a detailed panorama of the histopathological aspects of breast cancer in a group of Mexican women at the Angeles Mocel Hospital.
Material and methods: Descriptive, observational, retrospective and cross-sectional study in 549 Mexican women diagnosed with breast cancer corroborated by histopathology of the Angeles Mocel Hospital during the 2006-2016 period.
Results: We recorded an increase in the frequency of new cases in 2013, being 13.2% (73 cases) with a laterality of 51% in the right breast (280 cases). Average age of presentation: 55.1 years, with the most affected group being 41-50. The frequency of infiltrating ductal carcinoma was 67.4% (379 cases), demonstrating that the moderately differentiated or grade II histological grade is the most common within invasive ductal carcinomas occurring in 41.6% (158 cases).
Conclusions: It was identified that, on average, 50 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, 2013 being the year with the highest number of registered cases. The age of presentation in Mexican women is still lower compared to developed countries, with the most common histological type being infiltrating ductal carcinoma.
