ABSTRACT
Introduction.
Noise-induced hearing loss affects 20 million workers. There is no drug of choice to reduce the cochlear damage induced by this physical
agent.
Material and Methods.
Comparative experimental study, which included nine guinea pigs that were grouped into three groups: the first, received a vasodilator
(ginkgo biloba); the second received vitamin A, C, E and magnesium; meanwhile the third group, received saline.
All guinea pigs were exposed to 80 decibels for eight hours a day for seven days; Afterwards, the cochlea were analized and a comparison of
the groups according to the Covell and Davis classification was made.
Results.
When comparing the vasodilator against placebo, we found a value of p <0.002 in favor of the first; but when comparing the vasodilator
against vitamins, we did not find statistical significance.
Discussion.
We propose to carry out more studies to verify if the administration of vasodilators could protect the human ear and thus be established as a
prophylactic medicine in workers exposed to noise.
