Frequency of children with tuberculous meningitis hospitalized in a pediatrics hospital between 1991 and December 2000

ABSTRACT
Objective. To know the frequency of tuberculous meningitis in children in the hospital.
Material and methods. It is a retrospective study in 47 cases of tuberculous meningitis seen in between of 1991 to 2000. The following variables were analyzed: age, sex, month at entrance, place where they coming, state of nutrition, clinical status and fatality rate.
Results. The frequency of cases for age was higher (59.5%) in those below 36 months age. The most frequency clinical status was the II with 25 cases (53.2%). Most of the cases came from the rural areas: 14 (30%) and 17 (36%) were from suburban areas. Four of the 47 cases die so, there was a fatality rate of 9.5%.
Conclusions. The tuberculous meningitis is still a public health problem, due to the increment in the incidence of the disease in the population. It is necessary to keep in mind this possibility of this diagnosis in order to identify early this illness.
