Predicción de caries. Indicadores de riesgo en saliva y placa dental en niños sanos

RESUMEN
Objetivo. Identificar marcadores bucales que permitan identificar niños a riesgo de caries dental en niños sanos.
Material y métodos. A 66 niños sin caries, de 6 años de edad, se les midió el volumen de flujo salival y la velocidad de acidificación de la saliva. Se les cuantificaron las bacterias mutans y lactobacilos, en saliva y la placa dental. Treinta meses después, se les examinó para conocer quiénes tenían caries y saber qué indicador estaba asociado con la caries.
Resultados. Treinta y cinco por ciento de los niños desarrolló alguna lesión. La velocidad de acidificación salival fue el indicador con mayor certeza diagnóstica (p ‹ 0.016); este indicador tuvo una sensibilidad de 78% para identificar a los niños con caries y su especificidad fue de 82%.
Conclusiones. La velocidad de acidificación permite identificar, con cierto margen de certeza los niños que no tendrán caries: especificidad de 82.
