ABSTRACT
Objective:To describe and discuss the myths regarding insulin therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes in a general
hospital in Lima-Peru.
Methods: A cross-sectional study included 360 patients with type 2 diabetes who attended an
outpatient endocrinology clinic at the Central Air-Force Hospital in Lima-Peru. The frequency of myths about insulin
therapy using a questionnaire with a Likert scale was evaluated. We describe and analyze every myth and evaluate those
regarding Insulin users (IU) and patients who received education about the use of this medication.
Results: Of a total of
patients, 60.8% were women, 37.2% were insulin users (IU), the mean age was 67.4±10.7 years and the mean of disease
duration was 10.3±9.2 years. Among Insulin Users, 66% had received education in insulin therapy. “
Once people begin
using insulin, they will have to take it for the rest of their life” was the most frequent myth (48%), while “
Insulin shots are
painful” was the lowest (13.9%). The presence of myths was high in NUI. The frequency of myths among those who
received education on the use of insulin was not significantly lower.
Conclusion:The Myths evaluated were present
with different frequencies, higher in NIU. Education in insulin therapy was not a condition to reduce the presences of
myth.
