ABSTRACT
An 11 year-old boy was admitted to the hospital due to fever, headache, diffuse abdominal tenderness, malaise and convulsions. In the bone - marrow culture was identified
Salmonella typhi; the biochemical tests and positive agglutination test allowed to characterize the O cell-wall lipopolysaccharide and the Vi capsular antigen. The radiological findings of thickening of the terminal ileum with enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes was consistent with the clinical diagnosis of typhoid fever. This report described the clinical rules for the diagnosis of this disease and their confirmation by means of the laboratory and other exams. Also it is mentioned the epidemiological study in order to know the possible infection source and the way of the transmission of the S. typhi: it was found that the healthy mother carried the microorganism. The boy was treated with oral chloramphenicol, but it is mentioned too other antibiotics.
