Health care-associated infections, knowledge in a Venezuela hospital

ABSTRACT
Background.Health care associated infections (HCAI) represents a public health problem that can be prevented and staff has an important role in this regard.Objective. To evaluate the knowledge of the hcai and their prevention in the medical and nursing staff of the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Ruiz y Páez from Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela.
Methods. A stratified random sampling was performed. A survey was conducted to investigate knowledge in three specific areas: HCAI, standard precautions and hand hygiene, using an anonymous questionnaire, self-administered.
Results. The sample consisted of 102 professionals: 60 nurses and 42 doctors; 74.5% were female and 25.5% male. The average age was 32.4 years (SD ± 7.45; range: 21-58). 52.9% of participants approved the survey, however, the average score was 17.3 points below the average needed to pass it. Most of the staff know the basics concepts about standard precautions but not about the generalities of HCAI neither hand hygiene.
Conclusion. The staff does not have adequate knowledge about health-care associated infections and their prevention.
