ABSTRACT
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are asymptomatic in most cases and are discovered in an incidental
fashion but sometimes it manifests acutely due to rupture. A rupture represents a medical emergency
with a high mortality. Up to 80% die upon arrival at the hospital and 50% during the surgical procedure.
Only 10 to 25% of patients with a broken AAA survive. So, an early diagnosis is important in order
to perform an elective repair and decrease the mortality. Ultrasound is very useful for early detection.
This is the reason why a diagnostic algorithm with non-invasive vascular laboratory has been proposed
in patients with high risk, whether symptomatic or asymptomatic, in the Angiology and Vascular
Surgery Service of the Hospital General de Mexico “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga”.
