ABSTRACT
Introduction. Neoplasms of the appendix are a rare diagnosis, being most of the time, a transoperative or postsurgical histological finding. They constitute 0.4% of the gastrointestinal tract tumors, however, the malignant presentation of the disease is very complex.Objective. Our objective was to report the prevalence and histology of appendiceal tumors in appendectomies performed for a period of 6 years.
Material and methods. Retrospective, observational and descriptive study where the prevalence of malignant and benign appendix tumors is reported by histopathological findings. The tumors were found incidentally in patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis, surgically managed by the General Surgery service of the Hospital Civil of Guadalajara "Fray Antonio Alcalde” for a period of 6 years. The medical records of the patients in whom an appendix tumor was found were reviewed, including the histology.
Results. We found 2,344 patients with a diagnosis of acute appendicitis and with a histopathological result in the period of six years, of which 10 biopsies were positive (0.42%) for appendiceal tumors. The clinical picture of acute appendicitis was presented in all cases.
Conclusion. Appendix neoplasms are a rare finding, the prevalence found in this study is even lower than the reported worldwide (0.42% vs 0.8-1.7%). Neuroendocrine tumors (carcinoid) were the most frequently found.
