ABSTRACT
Aim: To determine whether the space closure using the piezocision technique in patients with extractions of the first upper premolars during a period of 63 days, contributed to a faster space closure compared with the control group.
Material and methods: A random sample of 12 patients who underwent piezocisionprevious to the space closure of extraction site. For the evaluation of the space closure, study models were taken in 4 appointments, which were at the start, at 21 (T1), 42 (T2) and 63 (T3) days, in which measurements were made on the palatal surfaces of the upper lateral incisors and canines on both sides, in which vertical lines were drawn at three points were measured that corresponded to the incisal, middle and cervical edges for evaluation during space closure which was compared with the opposite side as a control group.
Results: There were no statistically significant differences during space closure with the piezocision treatment during 21 and 42 days, compared to the control group; however there were statistically significant differences up to 63 days in the experimental group compared to the control group (p ‹ 0.001).
Conclusions: There were no adverse effects with the piezocision treatment during the treatment of space closure. It was evident until 61 days that the closure of spaces increased significantly compared with the control group.
