ABSTRACT
In the aging process, the term «inflammaging» is important, describing the inflammatory state characteristic of aging associated with chronic exposure to both endogenous and exogenous antigens, as well as stress, with the participation of the innate and adaptive immune system. Another process involved is «immunosenescence», which refers to the change of the immune system with age; that is, it is the aging of the immune system. The role of various cytokines such as IL-1 and IL-6 is important, as is the T lymphocyte response, predominantly Th2-type. These changes has impact on all organs and systems of the body, including the skin, with neutrophil and macrophage activity that translate into photoaging and elastosis. Among the intervention strategies to counteract these effects are physical exercise, caloric restriction, consumption of antioxidants, and some drugs such as statins or metformin.
