ABSTRACT
Artificial oxygen carriers may be grouped into
two categories: Hemoglobin-based solutions
and perfluoro-chemical based emulsions. Allogenic
erythrocyte transfusions represent a limited
resource and are associated with adverse
events such as acute transfusion reactions,
transmission of infectious diseases, immunosuppression
and postoperative infections. Although
“artificial blood” is not yet a clinical reality,
several temporary “artificial oxygen carriers”
are in late stage clinical development.
