Characterization of patients with renal trauma

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Renal traumas are a frequent problem today.Objective: To characterize patients with renal traumas.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in 10 patients diagnosed with renal trauma. They had been admitted in the urology service at Dr. Joaquín Castillo Duany Hospital from January 2003 to January 2009. The variables studied were age, severity of the renal injury, symptoms, medical procedure and complications.
Results: The patients aged 10 to 20 and 21 to 30 years (30 %), they were all male. traffic accidents (50 %) was the predominant cause. Hematuria was the prevailing symptom (90 %), the procedure used was conservative in 70 % of those affected, according to degree of renal injury. The most frequent complications were infections of the surgical wound (20 %).
Conclusions: Renal trauma predominated at young ages and male sex. Hematuria was the most frequent symptom. In most cases, conservative behavior and medical management in patients constitute the initial behavior of choice.
