Introduction: Acute mediastinitis due to esophageal perforation is a serious and fatal disease, associated with the presence of great variety of germs located in the mediastinum and in the bloodstream. Objective: To identify the microorganisms that are most frequently isolated in the blood cultures and secretion cultures of patients with mediastinitis.
Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional investigation was carried out in the General Surgery Department of Saturnino Lora provincial teaching hospital in Santiago de Cuba from January 1990 to July 2014. The population was constituted by all hospital hospital discharges with acute mediastinitis due to esophageal perforation, of which a sample of 30 patients was selected.
Results: Staphylococcus and Streptococcus were among the most frequently isolated microorganisms.
Conclusion: Microorganisms that predominated were of the staphylococcal and streptococcal type, and were present in all compartments of the mediastinum and in the pleural cavities, when the infection was disseminated.
