ABSTRACT
Introduction: “Death at old age is unavoidable, but at younger ages it is”. Sir Richard Doll. We must work for that. Premature mortality and its causes are a reflex of the sanitary condition of a country, its periodic analysis is necessary for the statement of Public Health policies to increase life expectancy in the population.Definition: In this study premature death was defined as death occurring before the age of 65 years.
Material and Methods: We reviewed the general mortality rates and the cardiovascular mortality rates by age groups published in the Annuals Mortality Report of the Statistic Department of the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Cuba. General mortality rates and from cardiovascular diseases were obtained and its distribution by age groups.
Results: Mortality rates by cardiovascular diseases have increase year by year but mainly due for the ageing of the population. Premature mortality rate by all causes of death show a lowering trend, but not by cardiovascular diseases.
Final Comments: Premature mortality rate by cardiovascular diseases do not show important variations in the years studied. Its extreme values are almost identicals. We have to work very hard to reach the goals of ONU/OMS in premature death by cardiovascular diseases in 2030.
