ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to elucidate, in a decision making
situation, the role of future time perspective, goal content and
its underlying motivation on the willingness to make an effort to
its achievement and to feel virtual regret. In addition, the relationship
between future perspective and regret as a trait was
explored. To this end, 242 university students classified as having
long and short extension of future perspective were exposed
to decision scenarios including intrinsic and extrinsic
goals in the context of an autonomous or controlled motivation.
The results showed a significant effect of these variables and
the interaction between future perspective and underlying motivation
on effort disposition. There was also a significant difference
between high and low future perspective participants in
regret as a trait. These results were interpreted in light of two
important theories in the field of motivation and decision making,
respectively, Self-determination theory and Prospect theory.
Also, it was taken into account the theories of future time
perspective and regret 1.0.
