ABSTRACT
Background: Chronic periodontitis (CP) is a destructive inflammatory process caused by dysbiosis of oral microbiota, which results in an altered bone metabolism. The permeability of the binding epithelium allows the extravasation of plasma proteins and cellular components such as neutrophils. The objective of this work is to quantify the number of neutrophils and epithelial cells in salivary smears of subjects with CP.
Material and methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Two groups were formed: group 1 or CS (n = 10) and group 2 or CP (n = 10). Saliva smears were made and stained with Hemocolorante Rápido Hycel No. Cat. 548. The number of neutrophils and epithelial cells were quantified by light microscopy.
Results: The number of neutrophils in saliva was significantly higher in the group of subjects with CP compared to the SC. The percentage of neutrophils in the CP group (17%) is higher than the percentage of neutrophils in the SC group (9.5%).
Conclusion: Preliminary results show that salivary smears from subjects with CP show a greater number of neutrophils compared to the CS group, therefore salivary smears could be an informative source for the monitoring of the cellular component in saliva.
