ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this research is to report the construct
validity and internal consistency of the Multicultural State-
Trait Depression Inventory, based on the Confirmatory
Factor Analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling. Provided
that the utilization of our measure is oriented towards
the study of depression in a normal population, the analyses
were carried out on a sample of 446 adult university students
at Barranquilla, Colombia. Based on the CFA analyses, two
models were examined: the bifactor model and the correlated
oblique model on each of the sub-scales: state and trait.
The analyses performed on this Colombian sample suggest
two inverse correlated factors namely,
distress and
eustress,
both identified by items that described positive and negative
cognitions and emotions. The goodness of fit index and
adjusted goodness of fit index for the oblique factors of the
state sub-scale were reasonable: CFI = .984, RMSEA = .047 (CI
90% = .034, .060), NFI = .943, SRMR = .064. The goodness of
fit index and adjusted goodness of fit index for the oblique
factors of the trait sub-scale were highly satisfactory: SB-χ
2
(
gl: 53) = 63.555 (
p › 0.05), CFI = .993, RMSEA = .021 (CI 90%
= .000, .038), NFI = .988, SRMR = .053. Confirmatory factor
analysis indicates there is evidence of two inversely correlated
dimensions (
distress and
eustress) in both state and trait
sub-scales. These findings suggest that conceptualizing depression
as a bidimensional construct that highly relates to an
emotional dysregulation is very helpful to better understand
its components, dynamics, and relationship with other variables
that afiect the course of this mental disorder.
