ABSTRACT
In this study 53 cataract surgeries were done and reviewed in the period January 2001 – March 2002 in the Military Regional Hospital of Tampico, by extracapsular extraction technique, with the objective to evaluate the efficacy of the surgical treatment.53% of the cases belong to the female sex, the age ranged between 60-74 years old in 57%; the left eye predominated with 53%; 17% had surgical complications, 2% were transoperative and 15% postoperative, intraocular hypertension being the most frequent in the immediate postoperative period: 23% of the patients presented intraocular pressure higher than 20 mm Hg in the preoperative exam, the 100% presented less than 20 mmHg in the late postoperative. Residual refraction was less than ± 2.50-4.00 in 91% of the cases. Posterior chamber intraocular lens were implanted in 98%; 55% presented visual function worse than 20/200 in the preoperative and 92% had visual function better than 20/40 in the postop. It is concluded that the index of complications is similar to literature reports, that the postoperative visual function is better, therefore surgical management done is effective.
