ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyse the procedure of installation and the complications associated with subcutaneous vein reservoir (SVR) installed for seven and half years.
Design: Multicentric, retrosprospective, observational, nonrandomized, noncomparative study.
Patients and methods: From January of 1997 to June of 2004, a total of 105 subcutaneous vein reservoir were installed on one hundred and two patients by just one surgical team.
Results: Of 102 patients, 76 were female and 26 male, with an average age of 48. On 92 patients the indication for the installation of the Subcutaneous Vein Reservoir was for chemotherapy, and the other ten were for parenteral nutrition. The specific oncologic diagnosis was: breast cancer 57.1%, gynecological cancer 13.3% and hematological cancer 8.5%. There was no intraoperative morbidity or mortality. There was no surgical morbidity, three cases had late catheter infection, 6, 7 and 4 months after, and 2 with catheter malfunction because of proximal bending.
Conclusion: Subcutaneous Vein Reservoir is an excellent vascular access, with a minimal morbidity rate and is safe and comfortable for the patient.
