ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose of this paper was to Evaluate Epicardial Fat (EFT) in subjects with hypertension, borderline hypertension (BLH) and normotension.
Methods: We evaluated 120 subjects divided into 3 groups, Group H, 40 hypertensive patients, Group BLH, 40 subjects with BLH, and Group N, 40 normotensive subjects. In all of them, the epicardial fat thickness was measured as described by Iacobellis, with an Aloka alfa 6 equipment (Japan), by two cardiologists who were unaware of the clinical data. Statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA.
Results: EFT was 4.55 ± 1.7 mm in H group, 4.52 ± 1.6 mm in BLH group and 3.34 ± 1.3 mm on N group. We did not find any difference in EFT between groups H and BLH (p=0.417). However, we found significantly differences in EFT between group N and groups BLH (p=0.0098), and H (p= 0.007).
Conclusions: Hypertensive and BLH patients have greater EFT than normotensive subjects. Interestingly, the epicardial fat patterns in the patients with BLH resemble those from hyper-tensive patients, instead of normotensive subjects.
