Burnout Syndrome in Family Medicine Residents

ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the frequency of Burnout Syndrome (BS) in a group of residents of Family Medicine.
Methods: Observational and longitudinal study. It included residents of the specialty in a family medicine in Family Medicine Unit 80 of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, Morelia, Mexico. Two measurements were made at a six-month interval. The following were applied: Burnout Brief Questionnaire; Maslach inventory for emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal fulfillment and questionnaire for sociodemographic variables. Descriptive statistics was applied. The statistical package for social sciences (SPSS 24) was used.
Results: Of 69 residents, 39 (56.5%) were women and 30 (43.5%) men, 38 (55.1%) from 25 to 29 years of age predominated; 34 (49.3%) single followed by 26 (37.7%) married. 24 (34.8%) of first year, 23 (33.3%) of second and 22 (31.9%) of third. At the beginning 5 (7.2%) doctors presented SB in the second measurement 14 (20.3%). The BS predominated in 9 (13.04%) women, 10 (14.49%) men of 30-40 years, 10 (14.49%) single and 6 (8.7%) second-year residents.
Conclusions: There was a low frequency of SB, with a high level prevailing; with emotional exhaustion and high depersonalization and low personal fulfillment. In women; aged 30 and 40, single and second-year residents.
