ABSTRACT
Voltage gated potassium (Kv) channels are proteins that form potassium (K+) selective
pores in cell membranes. They open or close in response to changes in the transmembrane
potential and are essential for repolarizing action potentials, and thus for
the functioning of excitable tissue. In addition to these well-known functions, it has
recently been proposed that some Kv channels can influence cellular events in ways
that do not depend on their function as ion channels. This review present examples
of the non-canonical functions of Kv channels.
