Apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein a-i ratio and components of metabolic syndrome in adolescents with obesity: Effect of hypocaloric low-carbohydrate diet

ABSTRACT
Aim: To evaluate the effect of hypocaloric low-carbohydrate diet on apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I ratio and components of metabolic syndrome in adolescents with obesity.
Material and methods: Ten adolescents with obesity between 16-20 years of age were evaluated before and 6 weeks after hypocaloric-low carbohydrate diet respect to compounds of metabolic syndrome according NCEP-ATP III criteria, body composition, glucose, insulin, lipids, uric acid, HOMA, apolipoprotein B, apolipoprotein A-I and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I ratio.
Results: 7 of 10 subjects have metabolic syndrome. Weight, BMI, waist circumference and percentage of corporal fat diminished significantly (
p 0.0001) like fasting glucose (
p 0.02), glycemia 2 hours after oral glucose tolerance test (
p 0.0001), triglycerides (
p 0.04), HDL-cholesterol (
p 0.03), insulin (
p 0.04) and HOMA (
p 0.03). The relation apo B/Apo AI diminished 7%. In individuals with weight reduction of › 8 kg, apolipoprotein B diminished 8.8% and the relation apo B/Apo AI in 10.9%. In subjects with reduction of IMC › 3 the level of apolipoprotein AI increased 5.4%, apolipoprotein B diminished 11% and the relation Apo B/Apo AI diminished 16.8%. The reduction of apolipoprotein B was proportional to the loss of weight.
Conclusions: The hypocaloric low carbohydrate diet is well tolerated, safe and diminishes in a short period of time the Apo-B/Apo-AI ratio, modifying favorably the components of metabolic syndrome in adolescents with obesity.
