ABSTRACT
Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) includes transport defects in bicarbonate reabsorption and/or hydrogen excretion. It is classified according to clinical or functional studies in distal, proximal, combined, and hyperkalemic. In general, it is characterized by a normal glomerular filtration rate and hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis with normal plasma anion gap, and clinically, delayed weight growth, polyuria, polydipsia, refractory rickets. The situation in Mexico is analyzed—since false diagnoses have been detected—and the diagnostic approach is emphasized.
