ABSTRACT
Congenital bladder outlet obstruction in children has several etiologies. Obstruction may be functional or secondary to anatomic problems. Diagnostic pathways must be established considering gender and the clinical presentation. In male children, posterior urethral valves are the most common pathology, and in girls, an ectopic ureterocele should be considered. Urinary tract infection is the most common clinical presentation; however, we should investigate the associated urinary symptomatology focused on the mechanism of urination. We present representative cases of an entity that may be considered as a bladder outlet obstruction syndrome in both genders. Appropriate anamnesis in young patients with urinary sepsis, focused on the characteristics of urination, may allow an early diagnosis of lower urinary tract obstructions and secondary vesicoureteral reflux.
Conclusion: Early diagnosis of obstructive and reflux uropathies may prevent end-stage renal disease.
