ABSTRACT
Introduction: neonatal acute suppurative parotiditis is an uncommon infection and most of the publications about cases with this disease appear in the English literature. Objective: to underline the characteristics of neonates with acute suppurative parotiditis coming from populations closer to the Latin American context.
Methods: review study of case reports in literature involving neonates from countries of Ibero America, with diagnosis of acute suppurative parotiditis up to April 2016. Printed literature was reviewed in addition to searching in Internet. In the article reviews, several clinical and lab test aspects were collected, which proved the characteristics of these patients in particular.
Development: a total of 12 articles with case reports or case series of neonates with acute suppurative parotiditis from Spain, Portugal, Chile and Cuba were retrieved. The total number of cases was 31 plus a newborn with this type of infection about whom nothing had been previously informed. It was shown that neonatal acute suppurative parotiditis mainly affects term neonates, it is unilateral; the most common causative microorganism was Staphylococcus aureus and that the broad spectrum parenteral antibiotic-based treatment was effective for the complete recovery of patients.
Conclusions: neonatal suppurative parotiditis has been included in publications but restricted to 4 countries of Ibero America, namely Spain, Portugal, Chile and Cuba. The characteristics of its clinical expression, peculiarities of the causative microorganism, therapeutic management and progression agree with the published reviews about this netonatal infection.
