ABSTRACT
Introduction. Acute postoperative pain (APP) is a common complication
of surgery. Systematic evaluation and appropriate monitoring
is one of the basic indicators of the quality of care in patients
with total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH), ensuring rapid postoperative
recovery, decreased morbidity and hospital stay.
Objective.
To evaluate the APP by verbal numeric scale (VNS) and its treatment
in patients with TAH.
Material and methods. Prospective,
longitudinal and observational study was conducted from 2nd August
to 30th September 2013 in patients with TAH hospitalized in
Hospital de la Mujer, Ministry of Health, Mexico City.
Results.
Forty-seven patients were included; age 41.55 ± 5.22 years. The
main surgical approach was median incision [66.0% (n = 31)],
the most common technique was intrafascial [36.20% (n = 17)].
Ketorolac was the most used medication [42.6% (n = 20)] followed
by lysine clonixinate and tramadol [23.40% (n = 11)]. The score
obtained by VNS in the first hour was 4.51 ± 3.35 points, at the sixth
hour was 4.51 ± 2.68.
Conclusions. APP assessment should be
implemented systematically in all postoperative patients. It is
essential to establish a multidisciplinary treatment and choose the
ideal drug for adequate control.
