ABSTRACT
Previously it was thought that the presence of citrulline in the central nervous system (CNS)
had an exclusively hepatic origin; however, now it is known that there are enzymes in the brain
that synthesize it. Although the exact role of this amino acid is unknown, its concentration in
cerebrospinal fluid is associated with neurological and psychiatric diseases, so it is suggested that
its presence intervenes in the physiology and pathophysiology of the CNS.
