ABSTRACT
Background: Respiratory syncytial virus infection is common in children; however, in adults, it usually affects older ones, in the presence of heart disease, lung disease or immunocompromise. It usually occurs as an upper airway infection, although in a small percentage it can present as an infection of the lower airways. Objective: To describe cases of upper respiratory tract infection by respiratory syncytial virus in adults and the predisposing factors. Material and methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective case series including 10 adult patients diagnosed with respiratory syncytial virus infection by FilmArray test in the context of a clinical diagnosis of airway infection in patients with hospitalization requirement in the ABC Medical Center. Results: 90% of the patients were female, 50% had pulmonary or cardiovascular medical history. The infection presented mostly in adults older than 65 years old (six of the 10 patients). Conclusion: Respiratory syncytial virus infection, although rare, should be considered in all older adults with risk factors, since it can be associated with high mortality. With new detection techniques, it is important to diagnose these patients in a timely manner in order to provide the appropriate support treatment.REFERENCES
