ABSTRACT
Introduction: Almost 20% of the patients with diabetes, around the world, have not been diagnosed, and this figure is reaching the 50% in some other countries. It is estimated that in Mexico, in 1999, there where about 4.5 millions of patients with diabetes and the mortality tendency by this disease is increasing significantly. The ADA (American Diabetes Association) has approved a questionnaire for its diabetes detection campaigns and population education, called "You have diabetes and you don’t know?" It is an evaluation developed in population studies and has been designed for self tests. Objective: To describe risk factors in 20 years old and more population in the San Cristobal Huichochitlan Community, Toluca, Estado de Mexico, through the application of the questionnaire "You have diabetes and you don’t know?". Material and methods: It has been performed a descriptive study about diabetes and high blood pressure integral detection through a questionnaire applied to 423, 20 years old and more population of both sex inhabitants of San Cristobal Huichochitlan Community, Toluca, Estado de Mexico, from October, 1998 to May, 1999. This patients detection process has been divided in two parts, the first one was the application of the risk factors questionnaire "You have diabetes and you don’t know?"; the second one consisted in the blood pressure determination through a baumanometer recently calibrated. Results: The next results were obtained from the questionnaire applied to 423 people: People who participated in the investigation: Men 108 (25.5%), women 315 (74.5%). Age average 20 to 49 years old: 340 (80.4%), 50 to 64: 57 (13.5%) and more than 65 years old: 26 (6.1%). Questionnaire under 10 points: 285 (67.4%), 10 points and over (high risk) 138 (32.6%). Blood pressure level in patients with an optimal level: 294 (73%); normal blood pressure level: 21 (5.2%); from normal to high blood pressure level: 38 (9.4%); patients in the first stage 37 (9.2%); second stage 11 (2.7%); third stage 2 (0.5%). Conclusions: Diabetes and high blood pressure integral detection questionnaire is an excellent tool for identifying people in high risk for presenting these diseases, it reduces government costs, promotes primary prevention, systematizes registration and encourages the follow up of these diseases. This integral detection questionnaire is feasible thanks to the low cost in its application and the additional benefit that we get is that it is applied to general population that does not present the disease but is in constant risk.
