ABSTRACT
Introduction: Pytiriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a cutaneous disease of unknown ethiology. It has been related to autoimmune diseases, psoriasis and cancer.
Objective: The main objective of this observational and retrospective study is to describe the characteristics of our patients with PRP, as well as the possible relationship with the previously described diseases.
Material and methods: In this study we review the diagnosed cases of PRP in the Department of Dermatology of the «Hospital Universitario Doctor Peset», from January the first of 2008 to January the first of 2017.
Results: A total of 21 patients were included, with a mean age of presentation of 43 years. The most common form is the classic adult type. 4 patients had a history of psoriasis. 4 cases had an autoimmune disease. 2 patients had a history of neoplastic disease, one of them following a parallel course with PRP.
Conclusions: In PRP patients, we must consider the coexistence of psoriasis and autoimmune diseases. It is also important to discard the presence of a neoplasic subjacent process, mainly if clinical presentation is atypical or responds poorly to treatment.
