ABSTRACT
Case reports are an invaluable tool in the professional development of health workers and inseparable of the residents and fellow’s training. Their aim is to improve patient-centered care (customized medicine) during daily clinical practice, to stimulate the most up-to-date search for medical information (clinical research-evidence-based medicine), to promote knowledge of diseases and their most advanced treatments —thus increasing medical information, and they are the first step in developing writing and scientific publication skills, which are a requirement and an obligation in current contemporary medicine. The present article has the purpose of presenting, in general, the importance of case reports in medical literature and also to establish a guide for its elaboration and design that could be useful for residents and fellows in the health area.
