ABSTRACT
In 1980, Ludwing and colleagues described
patients who lacked a history of alcohol consumption
but had findings on liver biopsy that could not be
distinguished from those patients with alcoholic
hepatitis. Since then, “nonalcoholic steatohepatitis”
(NASH) was coined. Diagnostic criteria for NASH
proposed by Powell in 1990 included a liver biopsy
specimen that shows macrovesicular fatty
degeneration with inflamation, without evidence of
negligible alcohol consumption and absence of
previous infection with hepatitis B o C virus. The true
prevalence of NASH in the general populations is
unknow, but it has been reported that 1.2 to 9% of
patients undergoing liver biopsy; additionally it is
believed that NASH prevalence would incidence it
asymptomatic patients would be studied. The
anormality frecuently observed in the subjets is
elevated plasma liver enzyme level. NASH has been
described most frequently in females and it has been
asociated metabolic diseases, such as insulin
resistance, obesity, DM2, hyperlipidemias.
Pathogenesis of NASH is not clear, but some authors
have hypothesized mechanimics that involve free
fatty acid metabolism.
