ABSTRACT
OBJETIVE
To determine the effect of the intravenous Dexametaxona on the post-operating pain pre and post tonsillectomy, with or without adenoidectomy, in pediatric patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS
A controlled randomized double blind clinical trial was carried out at the Otorhinolaryngology, and Head and Neck Surgical Wards at the highly specialized medical unit of the “La Raza” General Hospital National Medical Center in Mexico City from february to august 2002. Sixty-nine children 3-15 years old candidates for a tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy were included in the study to measure pain on the Wong-Baker facies analogue scale. For the statistical analysis we used the SPSS 10.0 software
package.
RESULTS
Of 69 patients, 35 (50.7%) correspond to the study group and 34 (49.3%) comprised the control group, 35 (50.7%) were males and 34 (49.3%) were female between the ages of 3 to 15 years old. The analysis between groups allowed us to detect a statistically significant difference in pain, in favor of the study group (p 0.01) six hours after treatment.
CONCLUSIONS
Dexamethasone administered at a dose of 1 mg/kg (maximum 8 mg) every 8 hours divided in three doses, applying the first dose before surgery, decreased pain and favors a better and earlier incorporation to a normal diet in post-tonsillectomized patients with or without adenoidectomy.
