ABSTRACT
Introduction: The estimation of the body composition through anthropometric techniques is a recurrent aspect in the assessment of the armed forces soldiers, since it allows the control of diverse related variables. Objective: To describe anthropometric and body composition profiles through overweight indicators: Ideal Weight, Body Mass Index, and Waist Circumference. Methods: It was carried out an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional field research on 153 male applicants to the Army Soldiers Training School (Escuela de Formación de Soldados del Ejército [ESFORSE]), in ages from 19-24. There were measured size and weight values for the calculation of anthropometric equations, analyzing a total of 37 variables. The study is theoretically based on previous research studies that serve to compare results and establish correct strategic decisions. Results: The analysis of the results of the sample studied showed a body mass index of 21.09, representing 50 % percent of the sample, inferring that the group studied represents a homogenous sample for this indicator. On the other hand, normal weight prevails in the male applicants and the total of the sample shows waist circumference values under the low risk references. Conclusions: There is a prevalence of normal weight in the sample undergone to study, as this indicator is lesser than the one established in the general population, a pattern taken by authors such as Márquez, Castañeda, and Caiffa.
