ABSTRACT
Objectives. To identify the main indications of tracheostomy in Hospital “Primero de Octubre” of ISSSTE; to describe anesthetic techniques and surgical incision more used; to identify complications related to tracheostomy. All, in order to improve performance of this procedure in future.
Material and methods. Retrospective study of 55 cases of tracheostomy. Criteria of inclusion: patients submissive tracheostomy by any indication, of any age group and any sex, of September 1999 to September 2003.
Results. Main indications: respiratory insufficiency, secretion handling, prolonged intubation. Main pathologies of base: neurological, pulmonary and cardiac. Main anesthetic technique: local anesthesia, balanced general anesthesia. Main used incision: in invested V, made in 52 cases between tracheal rings 2 to 4.
Conclusions. Tracheostomy must be made, following specific indications, in operating room or Unit of Intensive Cares, of preference before day 11 of orotracheal intubation to avoid related complications, using cannulas with globe of low pressure in immediate postoperative to reduce risk of tracheal stenosis.
