ABSTRACT
Introduction: Suicide is the third cause of death in adolescents between 15-19 years. Factors associated with it are depression, family problems, drug abuse and anxiety.
Objectives: Determine the utility of the Birleson Scale to diagnose depression in healthy adolescents and those with suicide attempts.
Material and Methods: A comparative study was made during the period of december the 1st through march the 31th 2004, comparing healthy adolescents and those with suicide attempts chosen at random with similar characteristics like age and sex. Studied variables were: age, sex, social and cultural factors, suicide risk factors, diagnosis, treatment and evolution, the Birleson Scale which has a cutting point of 15 for the diagnosis of depression was used. The capture of information was made in Excel and software JMP version 5.12 for the statistic analysis using t student, chi square, Wilcoxon/kruskal Wallis y Fisher tests.
Results: 120 adolescents were studied, 60 with suicide attempt and 60 healthy, predominated female sex, average age was 14 years; 76% were from Hermosillo, 75% were catholics.
The difference between the groups was that adolescents with suicide attempts in their family antecedents had statistic significance in: disintegrated family, family violence, drug abuse, psychiatric disorders, and antecedents of suicide attempt, in account of the personal factors we have depressive equivalents, depression and , and antecedents of suicide attempt.
The Birleson Scale showed a difference of 4.4.points, with 14.7 for those who attempted suicide and 10.3 for those who were healthy, showing statistic significance P ‹ 0.0001.
Conclusions: This study showed that the Birleson Scale can guide us to diagnose depression in adolescents with suicide attempt, because they have more intensified depressive characteristics, which are important factors of the suicide risk.
