ABSTRACT
Therapeutic hypothermia is defined as a reduction of core body temperature for a certain period of time and it is
aimed at reducing the injuries associated with arterial blood deficit in the nervous system. This work contains the
mechanisms of cellular damage induced by ischemia and also the biochemical pathways targeted by hypothermia
effects. 43 articles indexed in PubMed were reviewed. The objectives of this work are directed to describe the
beneficial effects of therapeutic hypothermia in the context of cellular respiration affected by the ischemic event,
and also describe, from a molecular point of view, the neuroprotective effect of hypothermia. Understanding the
elements associated with the benefit of therapeutic hypothermia can integrate knowledge of basic sciences with
clinical situations and therefore contributes to encourage meaningful learning in medical students.
